Module 12
Video 1: Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the '50s and '60s
1. I chose this video because I like abstract work, such as Rothko. So I wanted to learn about the actual movement.
2. I learned about an artist I've never heard of named Helen Frankenthaler, and I quite like her abstract work. She uses pastels mostly.
3. The chapter discusses different types of abstract artists and pop art, and the video goes deeper on this movement in the 50s, 60s and 70s.
4. It was pretty dry because the narrator was boring. But I learned a new artist from the video which I appreciate.
Video 2: Andy Warhol Images of an Image
1. I chose this video because I wanted to watch the Rothko but the video was missing when I clicked on the link. So I chose the Warhol video because I never really understood Warhol's art and wanted to learn more.
2.The way Andy Warhol did the different colors of the same pictures is he used something called silk screen. They created a negative template of the image, and poured ink on it to essentially stamp the image as many times as he wanted.
3. The chapter briefly discusses Warhol but I don't recall the book mentioning the process of the silk screen, so it was interesting to know the deeper process Warhol took with his images.
4. I actually enjoyed this video! As soon as the video started with Velvet Underground's song Sunday Morning, I was in!
