Art Making: Mask
Inspirations for my Mask
Mask # 1
1. Long, sandy color, and simplistic
2. Shapes- tear drop head, triangle nose, heart shaped indents
Emphasis- 3D nose and impression of eyes
3. Calming features, simplicity creating kindness, a gentle mask
4. Longer and rounded lines create a gentle appearance. There's no vibrant, jarring colors, just one neutral color. This mask is definitely not one for intimidation
Mask #2
1. Pointed, sharp edges, slanted pointed eyes, red, cream, black color block, thin elongated face
2. Shapes- triangles, rectangles
Lines- Sharp edges
contrast- red, black, cream creating a color block. Strong colors.
3. Sharp features and contrast of red, cream, black creating a mask of warning and intimidation
4. Sharp lines create less inviting looks, red is the color of warning, not a kind looking mask. Possibly for scaring or intimidating an opponent
1. Polka dots, vibrant colors, either another face or a plant growing off the top of the head, extension of the face
2. Pattern of dots emphasizing the face, colors creating value of lighter and darker features, balance of the two colors green and orange
3. Splitting of the face creating a two-faced mask
4. The extension of the face is inspiring for my own mask. The colors not complimenting but very rather opposing creating an unsettling and not "aesthetic" look but the balance of the symmetry in the lines and how the colors are placed creates an aesthetic.
Sketching My Mask
My first sketch is plain like the first mask I saw, it incorporates the length which is what I definitely wanted to include
Sketch #2 is more like my final design. Like the last mask that inspired me I wanted an extension of the head and since the third one reminded me of a plant growing off the head I wanted to add that. And in this sketch I wrote out which colors i wanted in which parts.
My Final Mask
I wanted to create a mask with the idea of growth in mind. So i wanted plants to come out of the top of the mask's face but every feature and color within the mask to be something that feeds the growth. The lettuce leaves are the growing plants, the green underneath is grass. The eyes are blue tear drops like water to grow a plant. The nose and brown lines coming from the nose are the roots. The yellow surrounding the face and the yellow swirly lines are meant to be the warmth of the sun. The heart around the mouth and connecting to the roots is supposed to create the idea of loving something you want to grow. And the mouth is black because it's meant to be a seed.
I really wanted to make a clay mask but I had a hectic week and wasn't able to stop by a craft store to pick up some clay. But I wasn't sure what I wanted at the top of the mask because I wanted that part that extended off the face to be 3D in order to emphasize the realistic growth of the mind. Conceptually into reality. And I didn't know what I wanted the 3D part to be, then I opened my fridge to get some food (unrelated to me doing the project) and I saw my romaine lettuce and I was like that's perfect for what I want. I like the idea of my mask, I just wish I had different materials and more time to make something more refined.
