Visiting the Getty

1.
Title: Mythological Scene Artist/Maker: Dosso Dossi (Giovanni di Niccolò de Lutero) (Italian (Ferrarese), about 1490 - 1542) Place: Italy (Place Created) Date: about 1524 Medium: Oil on canvas Why? This piece specifically reminded me of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream which is my favorite play of his. The fantastical element of it is beauitful.
Title: Not Guilty Artist/Maker: Abraham Solomon (British, 1824 - 1862) Date: 1859 Medium: Oil on canvas Why? I love this painting because it looks like you could write an entire create story around it. The man is reunited with his family outside of the courthouse, that’s something you could write a novel about. It’s just very beautiful and touching. You can see the tears of joy and relief on the family’s faces. 2.
Portrait of Maria Frederike van Reede-Athlone at Seven Years of Age Artist/Maker: Jean-Étienne Liotard (Swiss, 1702 - 1789) Date: 1755–1756 Medium: Pastel on vellum Why? I absolutely love the pure innocence of this painting. The child is composed and seems mature for her age, but you know she was probably just like every other child. I feel connected to the painting because I would’ve wanted to be that little girl when I was younger. I used to love American Girl Dolls, specifically Samantha who dressed in an aristocratic fashion and I loved it. The feelings for me are similar to this portrait of the child. I envy her in a way.
Title: Lady Playing a Lute Artist/Maker: Bartolomeo Veneto Date: about 1530 Medium: Oil on panel Why? I feel a connection to this girl because she’s playing a string instrument and I know how to play the guitar. It’s interesting to see a painting of a woman playing an instrument, it almost seems progressive for it’s time. 3.
Title: Virgin and Child (Right side of Melun Diptych) Artist/Maker: Jean Fouquet Date: 1455 Medium: Oil on oak panel Why? I want to learn more about why the colors are like this, it stands out from other paintings/art from this time. The choice of blue and red like that seems like a more modernist approach to art. I’m curious as to why Fouquet used these colors for the virgin and child.
Title: A Young Girl Defending Herself against Eros Artist/Maker: William-Adolphe Bouguereau (French, 1825 - 1905) Date: about 1880 Medium: Oil on canvas Why? It’s called A Young Girl Defending Herself Against Eros, one would imagine a more sinister piece of art, but it’s very pure and playful looking. The young girl seems to have a little smile on her face as if she’s playing with Eros. I just am curious about the deeper background behind this playful painting.

  1. All of the images you have chosen are beautiful. They are all from the 14th to 19th century, a great time for oil paintings. I love that most of them show sfumato. I also am now curious of Fouquet's The Virgin and Child, it's a stunning piece but it really is peculiar.
